Vernon Hancock White's Obituary
Vernon H. White passed away peacefully at Menorah Life on May 30, 2024 at the age
of 90. He is predeceased by his parents, Cameron and Virginia White, and
sister-in-law, Suzanne White. He is survived by his brothers, Cameron, Clement
(Carole); nephew, Douglas (Donna) White; and nieces, Elaine Forrester and Donna
(Robert) Story; and many cousins and great-nieces and nephews.
Vernon moved to St. Petersburg with his parents in 1944. He attended local schools,
graduating from St. Petersburg High School in 1952. Subsequently, he graduated from
Auburn with a chemical engineering degree, and then joined the army and was
stationed in Japan.
Later, he went to Samford University to pursue a degree in music. This led to an
opportunity to work at the Von Beckerath Pipe Organ factory in Hamburg, Germany,
building pipe organs for five years. This included traveling to Poland, South Africa,
Japan, Hawaii and many other locations for installations.
Upon his return from Germany, Vernon embarked on his career as a pipe organ
technician -- tuning, repairing, and restoring organs. His personal mission was traveling
to Jamaica many trips over a period of ten years, repairing local organs.
From the time Vernon returned from the Army, he was very involved at Azalea Baptist
Church and the Royal Ambassadors. This was a Baptist mission group for school-age
boys -- scripture, life skills and camping. Trips out west and hiking were a part of the
experience.
Upon his retirement, he became involved with Starkey Road Baptist Church and the
"Wordless Books" ministry.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Starkey Road Baptist Church sanctuary,
8800 Starkey Road, on Saturday, July 27th, at 11:00 AM. A luncheon will be served in
the fellowship hall immediately following the service. Memorabilia will be displayed, and
there will be a time for sharing memories during the luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Azalea Baptist Church or to Starkey Road
Baptist Church.
