Shirley Priscilla Slater, age 97, passed away on February 27, 2018. She is preceded in death by her husband J. Thomas Slater, daughter Frances Slater and grandsons David Murphy and Daniel Slater; daughter in-law Laura Slater. She is survived by her children Eileen Paquette, Virginia Galvan, Donald Slater, Barbara McEwen, Katheryn Telly and Stella Rogers; daughter in-law Rosie Slater; 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
Shirley Slater was born in Vermont and raised in Connecticut, one of nine children. Being the oldest girl she was always expected to help in garden and with the other kids. Shirley was blessed in first marriage with a beautiful daughter. Her second marriage to J.Thomas Slater of 43 years produced 6 more wonderful children five girls and one boy.
Shirley always worked in the home and loved to crochet, she was always making Afghans, scarves and slippers for her children and grandkids. A good book was never far away and the offer of a card game around the kitchen table always got a yes. Who will ever forget all the summers mom had a garden out back, or when she would take us to pick berries. Seems mom was always supervising while we pulled weeds and picked the berries. When it came to fun she was all in, wither it was to go with Tom in the Cessna to the fly- in’s, hit the Casino, summers in Connecticut with Aunt Dot, Bunny & Sandy, trips to Louisiana or time at the lake. She loved picnics with the family or having everyone over to swim in the pool. If there was fun to be had she was packed and ready to go.
Shirley loved to be the center of attention; she was our very own Disney Princess. She loved to go to the Disney, Cedar Point, or any amusement park with the kids. She loved spending time with her family and couldn’t wait to see the grandkids, and looked forward to the family reunion each year. Shirley loved the boys and nothing was more fun than hugging all the handsome men around her. All her parties, as she got older were princesses themed; and she always enjoyed playing princess to the hilt.
In Shirley’s last few years she looked forward to sitting in the sun, feeding the squirrels, watching the birds and being taken for a walk or going out to eat with her kids and grandkids. She always ate soup or crapes, even when she wasn’t hungry she still had room for a blizzard or chocolate. Cards and letters received from the family was always the highlight of her day.
Shirley brought so much to our lives she will be dearly missed and always remembered!!!!
A visitation will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Saturday, March 3rd from 2-4pm with a service to follow at 4pm.
