Mr. Sherwin Hirshberg's Obituary
Hirshberg, Sherwin, 78, of St. Petersburg, passed away Oct. 5, 2012. Though born in McKeesport, PA to Herman David Hirshberg and Molly Parker Green on March 9th, 1934, Sherwin was considered a native of St. Pete since he lived in the Pinellas County area since 1937. He graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 1951 and joined the Navy where he served over 20 years and achieved the status of Chief Petty Officer. His service included time during the Korean war aboard the USS Philippine Sea nuclear powered ship. He also served aboard the John Hancock and as a MMI plank owner of the USS Bainbridge. His Naval career took him around the world numerous times. While serving in the Navy he was a company commander, from March 1968 - March 1969, training recruits at Great Lakes, Michigan. Sherwin was married to his beloved wife Betty Hirshberg who passed away in 2001. Sherwin was a member of the Second Time Rounders for many years. He was a friend to many who lived in the St. Petersburg area and had a great love of music. He began his love of music while in the St. Pete High Marching Band where he played the clarinet but switched to saxophone. He later played with various bands in the Navy aboard ships. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his giving nature. He will never be forgotten by his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all. Sherwin is survived by his daughter Debbie Hirshberg; sister Barbara Judi Seifried-Allen of Palm Harbor; nieces Robin Bergsma and Sharon Owens; and nephew Scott Seifried.
