Craig Hale
I had known Lonnie since high school where we both participated in the marching band. He played the trumpet and was always quite the character and joyful personality. I lost touch with him shortly after he graduated (`79) when he joined the Service. Back then, I remember he had a 1972 blue firebird in high school that I was envious of. Happily we were reunited (in Florida) when our paths crossed again in the most unlikely way. Through our mutual enthusiasm for the sport of NASCAR. In reconnecting with him, I had the pleasure of meeting him at his home for a pool side race party hosted by Sherry and himself. Even though it had been the better part of 40 years since I had seen Lonnie it was as if time had never past. Still a consistently gentle soul with his deep gruff voice filled with welcoming joy and understanding. Through our reconnection, we stayed in touch weekly via a mutual NASCAR fantasy league we both attended. He was a die hard Hendrick fan (as you can see by the #24 tee shirt he is wearing in one of the posted pictures on this page). Sadly it wasn't until this years season started that he wasn't participating in the league that I became concerned and discovered this sad news. I smile knowing that Lonnie always lived his life as full as the Lord would allow. The last time I saw him, he was happy in sharing with his friends enjoying the sport that he truly enjoyed. I wish we had one final lap together Pal... Race you later!
