John Nathaniel Dillard's Obituary
John N. Dillard, aged 82, passed away on August 27, 2024, in his hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida. Born on November 26, 1941, also in St. Petersburg, John lived a full life characterized by service, humor, and devotion to his loved ones.
John honorably served his country through two enlistments in the Army, including a tour in Vietnam, where he was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery. His commitment to fellow veterans continued long after his service, as evidenced by his active involvement in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
After his military service, John embarked on a career as a truck driver, a role he cherished not only for the journeys but also for the camaraderie found at truck rodeos, where he was a familiar and respected figure. His work ethic was unparalleled, and he was known for both his dependability and his readiness to lend a hand or share a joke.
John's personal life was marked by a deep commitment to his family and a love for his pets. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lee Dillard, and his beloved dog, Chip. He is survived by his daughters, Robin Dillard and Anna (Peter) Locke; grandchildren, Adam and Tasha Locke; his faithful dog, Patsy; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss his guidance and humor.
An avid singer, John's rendition of karaoke classics at the VFW was a much-anticipated treat. He also enjoyed playing slots, delighting in the chimes of a win, and he had a particular fondness for Chinese food and hibachi—a testament to his zest for life and good food.
John greatly enjoyed his yearly trips driving his motorhome from Florida to New Hampshire to visit Renee. There they would drive into Maine, or John would go on ride-along in Rene’s Police cruiser.
John's life was a testament to his resilience, kindness, and the enduring bonds of family and friendship. His legacy of laughter, service, and love continues to inspire all who knew him.
