Hitwant Sidhu's Obituary
Hitwant Sidhu, beloved father, husband, professor, mentor and friend, passed away on 25 November 2023 at the age of 96.
Hitwant was born on 3 March 1927 in Koharwala, India to mother, Bhagwan Kaur, and father, Khem Singh. Later in life, Hitwant came to the United States to pursue higher education and to seek better opportunities for him and his family. He completed his graduate studies at Springfield College from 1953-1955 and went on to obtain a Doctorate in Physical Education at IU Bloomington from 1955-1957. He became a professor at the IUPUI School of Physical Education in 1975, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1997.
In addition to the academic community, Hitwant was also an integral part of both the Indian community of Indianapolis and the community in Wanamaker, his home for over 50 years. He was incredibly thankful for and proud of the warm and lasting friendships that came from these communities.
Hitwant was predeceased by his three sisters, three brothers, and by his beloved wife and life partner of 62 years, Pushpa. He is survived by his devoted daughters and his sons-in-law: Rachna & Umesh Choudhry and Rashmi & Robert Recinto; and by his beloved grandchildren: Vishesh, Veer, Shivani, and Krishan.
Hitwant will be affectionately remembered for the unconditional love he showed to family and friends; for his dedication and service at IUPUI and within his community; for his love of gardening; and for the passion he had for various hobbies, including collecting celebrity autographs worldwide.
Hitwant was the respected patriarch of our family and our greatest supporter. His reliable presence, sage advice, and infallible willingness to lend a hand are the cornerstones of the great man he was and will always be, in memory.
