Dr. Frank Matthew Byers' Obituary
Dr. Frank M. Byers, a widely known and respected thoracic/vascular surgeon in St. Petersburg, died at home on June 2, 2009. Born in Bridgeport, CT in 1933, he moved to Florida with his parents and graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 1951. He received his medical degree from Duke University, where he was elected to the medical honor society of A A. He was a surgical intern and resident at Duke University Hospital, and was subsequently a cardiothoracic surgical resident at the University of Florida. Dr. Byers opened his private surgical practice in St. Petersburg in 1960, from which he retired in 1998. He held the offices of Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery in the early 1990's at Palms of Pasadena Hospital. Memberships included American College of Surgeons, International Society of Cardiovascular Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and Southern Thoracic Surgical Association. He was an avid boater throughout his adult life, and was a member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Upon retirement, he continued his boating, made good use of his golf membership at St. Petersburg Country Club, and renewed his teenage fondness for motorcycles in the form of a Honda Gold Wing. He joined his local chapter of the Honda Gold Wing Road Riders Association and enjoyed all the group's activities and camaraderie with his fellow bikers. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Monday, June 8, 2009, 6pm-8pm, at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5750 49th Street North, St. Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast are suggested (www.thehospice.org).
