Dr. Virgil "Father Cassian" Miller Newton III's Obituary
Dr. Virgil Miller Newton III, known in the Orthodox Church as Father Cassian, fell asleep in the Lord on August 8, 2025, at the age of 86. His passing leaves a deep void in the lives of those who knew him, but his example of faith, learning, and love will remain a guiding light.
He was born September 6, 1938, in Tampa, Florida, to Virgil Miller and Louisa Newton. A man of deep faith, intellectual rigor, and compassion, Father Cassian dedicated his life to service — both to the Church and to the pursuit of knowledge.
Father Cassian earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. He went on to receive doctoral degrees in Neuropsychology and Anthropology, blending his academic work with a profound commitment to pastoral care. In recent years, he served faithfully as an Orthodox priest, guiding and ministering to those burdened by spiritual wounds - anxieties, insecurities, depressions, and destructive habits of heart and mind.
For those who sought it, he offered the balm of Christ’s love and healing, both in his compassionate counsel, and through the grace given in the sacraments. Those who were blessed to know him remember a life wholly poured in service to God and for others, and a legacy measured in countless lives touched, comforted, and encouraged.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Ann Newton who walked beside him in life and ministry; his children, Johanna, Miller, and Mark; and four cherished grandchildren — Ariel, Quincy, Abbegale, and Nia — who brought him great joy and in whom he took great pride. His legacy is one of faith, wisdom, and love for both God and neighbor.
A visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Liturgy at 10:15 a.m. and Funeral Service at 11:45 a.m., on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 6447 76th Ave N, Pinellas Park, FL 33781. A graveside service will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5750 49th Street N. St. Petersburg, FL 33709 with a social gathering afterward in the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church Hall.
May his memory be eternal.
