Steven Raymond Laing's Obituary
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Steven Raymond Laing, age 62 after a courageous journey with cancer. Steven was surrounded by his Fiancé and companion of 19 years, Norma Hause during his last hours. Steven was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. During his childhood, Steven enjoyed playing little league baseball, tag football, and riding his mini bike. His family later moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where Steven was active in his church youth group and was a Thespian in the theatre club at the high school he attended where he graduated in 1980. He went on to complete his BA Degree in Business Management from St. Petersburg College in 2012. Steven was an intelligent and curious man. He never stopped wanting to learn, always reading up and things and solving math equations. He continued his studies and earned his certification as an electrician. He enjoyed working on cars and his inquisitiveness often led him to take things apart, just to see how they were built, what made them tick, and then he'd put them right back together again! Steven was a true outdoorsman, his heart belonged to the beach, where he could relax and connect with nature. He found immense joy in the tranquility of the water, whether it was casting a line to fish, cruising the open sea on a boat, or simply relaxing on the sandy shores. Steven's love for nature continued off the beach, he also enjoyed caring for and grooming plants and trees. When his body permitted, he was avid about his health and enjoyed working out. A devoted dog lover, Steven will be fondly remembered for his unwavering companionship with his beloved dogs, who were considered "cherished members of the family" who brought him comfort and happiness. Steven was an amazing man, although he faced multiple health challenges throughout his life, through his pain, he offered his help and advice and had great concern for his fiancé and her family. He will be remembered for his unwavering determination and ability to overcome obstacles, even as he bravely struggled with cancer in the final years of his life. Steven's faith in the Lord allowed him to undergo multiple procedures and chemotherapy just to live comfortably and have precious time with his fiancé and family. Through him, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. He confronted cancer head on and lived courageously with it until the very end. By inspiring and teaching us, he won his struggle in other very important ways. He was a wonderful role model right to the end. He is survived by his fiancé, Norma Hause, mother, Sandra Griffin, father, Curtis Griffin, daughter, Ashbey Morgan, brothers, John Curtis Griffin, Sean Curtis Griffin, nephew, Connor Griffin.
A memorial service will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday, November 24th. Family and friends are welcomed to celebrate Steven's life with a service beginning at 2:30 pm, followed by a reception from 3:30 to 5:30 pm.
