Shirley Ann Metcalf's Obituary
Shirley Ann Metcalf, 88, passed away at home, on October 28, 2022, in the loving arms of her family. Shirley was born in St Petersburg, Florida on May 15,1934, to William H and Anna Leadelle Hylton. Shirley attended St Petersburg High School, class of 1951, where she met the love of her life, Richard D Metcalf, whom she married in 1961. After high school, Shirley attended Mound Park Hospital School of Nursing, graduated in 1955, and became a Registered Nurse. Caring for others would prove to be a defining characteristic throughout her life. Shirley had a lifetime career in pediatric health care and maintained her nursing certification into her eighties.
Shirley loved the beach, lighthouses, and sunsets out on the dock. She also loved babies and animals and had many pets. She was an accomplished seamstress and an avid reader. She enjoyed tennis, playing games, painting, and lived an active lifestyle.
Shirley loved her granddaughters with all her heart and was very dedicated to them and their happiness. Shirley also kept in close touch with her nursing friends and classmates who were a large part of her extended family. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Shirley was preceded into eternal life by her parents, Leadelle and Robert King, her dear ‘Auntie’ Irma Hepburn, her brother William H King and her beloved husband Richard D Metcalf.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Paige (Metcalf) Gray-Christine (Alexander), son Michael Metcalf, granddaughters Katiel Gray, Sophia Christine and Sarah Christine, and great-grandsons John and Thomas. Shirley is also survived by a very large loving family of siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins and a lifelong circle of close friends.
