Sarah Emma Logan's Obituary
Sarah Emma Sams "Sammy" Logan, 93, of St. Petersburg, entered into eternal rest on May 29, 2014 peacefully with family at bedside. She was born July 15, 1920, in Georgetown, Kentucky, sixth of nine children of Ernest R. and Edna Cart Sams. She graduated from college at 19 and taught in a one room school in the mountains of KY before marrying Richard F. Logan and moving to Florida in 1946. Kind and generous, wise and witty, she made friends easily and kept them for life. She supported and guided many family members and friends through life's storms and faced her own with courage. She taught English at St Petersburg High School in the 1950s and in later life volunteered as a reading mentor to elementary students, a docent at both the Florida International Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts and was a dedicated member of Lakewood United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sharing the gift of southern hospitality and became a host family for foreign exchange students at Eckerd College, even traveling to Ecuador to visit one of her students. She was an avid bridge and tennis player and golfer. Sammy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Richard, son, John, and all her siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Logan of Andover, OH, sister-in-law, Margaret Sams, and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Sammy never lost her enthusiasm for new experiences or her sense of wonder. She was well-loved and we will all, family and friends, miss her deeply. The world was richer for her presence in it. There will be a memorial service in her honor on June 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 5995 Martin Luther King St South, St. Petersburg, followed by a reception. The family suggests charitable donations to Lakewood United Methodist Church or Suncoast Hospice, who's Orange Team cared for Sammy with great compassion and tenderness in her final months.
