In looking through old photographs, dad isn’t in a lot of the photos. It is not that he wasn’t there, he was the shutterbug. Dad was behind the scenes. He worked hard, both on the job and at home. Dad was always a “Do-It-Yourself” kind of guy and could fix just about anything. And when the kids wanted to “help,” he wouldn’t hesitate to let us. Though mom did not always think changing oil or fixing bike tires was appropriate for a young lady, dad would patiently teach.
He supported us, he believed in us, and he always told us we could be anything we wanted – we just had to work towards our goal. He worked with a lot of different people during his Navy and publishing careers. He accepted people for who they were, and he was universally respected. He didn’t mince words, so you knew where you stood. When my husband wasn’t sure what a conch pea was, dad bluntly said “If you don’t like it, don’t eat it.”
So, until we meet again in our heavenly father’s house, we will have a hole in our hearts.
We love you and we miss you.
