Richard David Tilka's Obituary
In Loving Memory of Richard D. Tilka
Born May 12, 1961 — Passed April 12, 2026
Richard D. Tilka, beloved son of George and Marjorie Tilka, lived a life defined by service, dedication, and deep love for his family. He is survived by his brother, Steven Tilka; his sons, Joshua and Matthew Tilka; and his cherished grandchildren, Hunter, Addyson, Joshua, Luca, and Emma.
From a young age, Richard showed a strong sense of character and commitment. As an Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow, where he earned the Bronze Palm, he embodied leadership and service early in life. After graduating from Seminole High School, he served his country by joining the United States Coast Guard in North Carolina. There, he became a skilled coxswain, eventually captaining his own 44-foot cutter and leading rescue missions for those in distress.
Richard later followed another calling close to his heart: a love for nature. He became a park ranger in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where he found joy in preserving the beauty of the outdoors and sharing it with others. It was during this time that he met Vanissa, and together they built a life and family, welcoming their first son, Joshua.
His journey eventually brought him to Titusville, Florida, where he continued his work with the National Park Service at the Kennedy Space Center, and later back to Pinellas County. There, he dedicated himself to working with troubled youth in the juvenile detention system, offering guidance, structure, and compassion to those who needed it most.
Richard found happiness in life’s simple pleasures—traveling with friends and family, camping, fishing, gardening, and tending to his critters. These moments reflected his peaceful spirit and deep appreciation for life.
Richard will be remembered for his strength, his kindness, and his unwavering dedication to both his family and his community. He leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and resilience that will live on in all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 3:30 PM, at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5750 49th Street N., St. Petersburg, Florida 33709. The family is accepting guests starting at 3:00 PM. Inurnment will take place at a later date, privately.
