Monty Wallace Smith's Obituary
Monty Wallace Smith, a respected educator, thoughtful traveler, and deeply beloved family member, passed away peacefully under hospice care on July 1, 2025.
He was born on July 18, 1944, to Lois Maxene and Wallace Smith in Wichita, Kansas. Monty’s life was shaped by a deep love for his family, a strong connection to the arts, and a curious spirit that took him all over the world.
Monty earned his Ph.D. in Education Administration from Florida International University in 1994. He spent many years working in higher education, eventually becoming Provost at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale. After retiring, he moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where he enjoyed a slower pace and time with friends, family, and his dog, Lita.
Earlier in life, Monty was an artist and art professor, and he never stopped appreciating good art. He traveled often and was always on the lookout for museums, galleries, and great design. He had a great eye for color and style—something his family appreciated when they needed help picking out furniture or choosing a paint color. He also loved the theater and saw shows across the country and abroad. Monty enjoyed yachting too, and some of his favorite memories were made out on the water.
In 2009, Monty had a lung transplant, and later he faced cancer as well. He handled both with strength and determination, far outliving what doctors expected. His will to keep going was one of his many remarkable qualities.
Monty was proud, handsome, and had a quick, dry wit. He offered thoughtful advice—and even more thoughtful gifts. He was a loving brother, a supportive uncle, and a loyal friend—always ready with the right words or a kind gesture.
He is survived by his brother Steven (Ann) Smith; nieces Jennifer Denlinger, Elizabeth (Scott) Denlinger, Jordan Smith, and Adrianne (Brian) Smith; many grandnieces and nephews; cousins including Janice Bonat; and dear friends including Bob Johnson. He is also missed by his sweet dog and companion, Lita.
Monty’s family takes comfort in knowing he is at peace. He will be deeply missed and remembered with love.
A service to celebrate Monty’s life will be held on what would have been his 81st birthday, July 18th. Immediately following the interment all are invited to Monty's House for a reception.
