Martin Hoover Blackwelder's Obituary
Martin Hoover Blackwelder, 95, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died of natural causes on May 11, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Peggy Blackwelder, St. Petersburg, Fl, his son Dean Blackwelder (Reina), Bradenton, FL, his daughter, Cindy Blackwelder, St. Petersburg, Fl, 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, two great, great grandchildren, and many dear nieces and nephews.
The youngest child of seven, he was born in High Springs, Florida to Cicero and Lonnie Smith Blackwelder, but was raised in St. Petersburg, FL. Martin earned his GED and completed some college course-work. He also served in the Merchant Marines.
He met the love of his life, Peggy Adams Blackwelder in 1948, at a dance at the St. Petersburg Coliseum. With Peggy at his side, he started Blackwelder Electric, an electrical contracting firm that enjoyed success throughout the State. After 50+ years in business, he retired where he continued to enjoy his love of fishing and time at his self-built home on the Rainbow (Springs) River in Dunnellon, Florida.
Martin was one of a handful of Electrical Contractors that formed the Electrical Workers Association that later went on to become the Florida West Coast Chapter of the Independent Electrical Contractors. His company’s participation was instrumental in growing electrical apprenticeship in the Tampa Bay Area. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #283 in St. Petersburg, FL where he served as the Master in 1965.
Martin will be remembered for his remarkable work ethic, his ability to build or repair almost anything and for his love for his family, especially his dear wife, Peggy. A man of very humble origins, he achieved his goals and supported hi sfamily through his own grit and perseverance. His memory will live on in the hearts of all of those who loved him.
A graveside service is at Memorial Park Cemetery on Monday, May 20, at 11:00 AM.
