Duke and Sally have been friends for years. His initial greeting always included “My Friend”. We met at Bethlehem church but extended to family dinners, poker, lake jobs, and especially his role as acolyte for church services.
They were god parents to Angel, our granddaughter. They were always involved in her life; cards, parties, etc. However, Duke recruited her for acolyte duties and taught her how to do the job. She really responded, making sure she was a church every Sunday. She was special when she needed it the most. That relationship has flourished with the whole family for over 30 years.
I was remembering a couple special times. At our lake house, we had a lot of projects. Our Larson speed boat was in the water, unprotected. I had a guy put in the poles for a boat house. Duke helped me put the roof on the ‘building’ over the water using a lot of lumber I used from taking down a deck at our Spring Valley house. Also, I built a small shed for lake accessories; fishing rods, life jackets, etc. I found out the shed was over the lot line and had to be moved 20 feet. Duke helped me move and reposition. Both boat house and shed are still standing 30 years later.
Every time I go down route 123 in Vienna I remember going up the street across from the nursery. Their house was on the right on a short street that terminated at the school next to the Larsons. I remember the small swale with a quaint bridge and, I believe, a shed in the corner with a vine.
Those memories still bring a smile because I see a smile in return. They’re the best friends that live beyond life. It’s the type of relationship that one hopes for and realizes when returned.
