Leonard S. Hogan's Obituary
Hogan, Leonard Sherrill, age 88, born July 1st, 1936, passed away August 19th 2022, at St. Anthony's Hospital, after a cardiac event. Leonard was an only child who grew up when St. Petersburg was a place where you would routinely see foxes, and go exploring in nature because it was all around you, and the most exciting thing was the 5 cent movie theatre. When the first Orange Belt Railway train came into St. Petersburg, his great-grandfather, Joe Hogan, was the engineer. Joe had built one of the first houses in the Old Northeast area for $5,000.00 in the very early 1900's and remains in the family today. His father also worked for the railroad. Dad graduated from St. Petersburg High in 1953, and his father attended there when it was located on Mirror Lake. His children and grandchildren graduated from there as well, making it a total of 4 generations of SPHS alumni. While in high school he started building car engines, and became a fan of stock car racing. He actually built several racing engines and when the Daytona Race was held on the beach the public was allowed to pay a fee and run the 1/4 mile on the beach for time. He consistently had the fastest times, and sold several engines on the spot. The buyer would remove the engine and dad would have to have the car towed back home. Leonard became a well respected Electrical Contractor by the name L.S. Hogan Electric. He never lost his love of engine building and opened his own machine shop, at the same time, Precision Engine. Over the years for fun, he and his friends would take the stock car they built and travel the Southeast to stock car races. He was a very hard working, dedicated, and could fix anything mechanical. He was predeceased by his parents, Minneola Mills Hogan from Arcadia, and Joe Hogan Jr. who was born in St. Petersburg. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Hogan, his daughters, Sandra Hardin married to Paul Hardin III, who he always introduced affectionately as "This is my son-in-law, Worthless", who was like a son to him, Susan Hogan, his grandchildren, Brandon Hardin (Eva), Allison Hardin Davidson (Kyle), and great-grandchild, Barbara Hardin. We already miss him greatly.
