Laura Marie Decker's Obituary
Laura Marie (Egeland) Decker, 88 of Kenneth City, FL passed away on Wednesday July 10, 2024 at the Gulf Shores Care Center in Pinellas Park, FL after an extended illness.
Laura was born on March 14, 1936 in Winthrop, IA, the daughter of Darrell Wayne and Amy Violet (Bush) Egeland. She graduated from Winthrop High School. On April 4, 1954 she married Ronald Myrton Zimmer. They resided in Independence, IA where they raised their five children. Ronald passed away on May 23, 1977. On October 27, 1978 she married James William Decker in Winthrop and resided there until 1986 when they made their home in Clearwater, FL.
Laura worked many years as a secretary at the Mental Health Institute in Independence and at the Florida Department of Human Services. She volunteered at various organizations throughout her life including the Buchanan County Historical Society, St James Episcopal Church, the Boy Scouts, St Catherine’s Guild and the Veteran’s Center in Florida. She achieved the highest ranking of Worthy Matron in the Eastern Star organization. She was always proud that while in school she won the spelling bee.
She enjoyed sweets, spoiling the grandkids, cooking, cleaning, and playing bingo. She was known for her lemon pie. She enjoyed old cars, watching NASCAR, having a cold beer and dancing with her husband Jim. Laura was always proud of her children and grandchildren. She was a good hostess and enjoyed people. When she met you, she tried to find how you were connected.
She is survived by sons, Craig (Patty) Zimmer, Dr. Mark (Nancy) Zimmer, and daughter Rebecca (Mark) Mann. Grandchildren; Jeremiah, Chad, Katie, Zach, Matt, Kayla, Hannah, and Caleb, and three great grandchildren. Brothers-in-law, Patrick Decker, Robert (Kathy) Decker, Steven (Georgia) Decker, and sister-in-law Jean Anne Griswold.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ronald, son Rick Zimmer, daughter Ronda Zimmer, daughter-in-law Becky Zimmer and grandson Daniel Zimmer. sister Barbara Hogan, and brother Garth Egeland.
Services will be held on July 20, 2024 in Winthrop, Iowa
