Julius Walker Durphey's Obituary
Julius Walker Durphey was born on May 4, 1942, in the vibrant neighborhood of Morrisania in the Bronx, New York. His parents, Gladys M. Durphey and Jimmy Hines, lovingly raised him alongside his sister Henrietta Snyder, and brother, William Snyder.
As a young student, Julius attended P.S. 042 The Claremont School until the 6th grade, after which he continued his educational journey at P.S. 055 JHS in 1953. In 1956, he embarked on an educational path focused on plumbing at Bronx Vocational High School, graduating in 1959. Following his high school years, Julius worked in various jobs, with a notable role as a cashier at A&P Supermarket from 1959 to 1960. Then, on August 9, 1962, Julius Durphey was enlisted into the U.S. Army Corps and stationed at the Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He demonstrated exceptional skills throughout his service, earning badges, including the Marksman Badge, Expert Badge, and Good Conduct Medal. His service encompassed pivotal periods during the Cold War and Vietnam. During his time in the army, Julius crossed paths with Anita L. Rice, with whom he was married for 13 enriching years. Together, they welcomed two lovely daughters, Veronica A. Durphey and Tonja D. Durphey, into the world. After parting ways, Julius embarked on a new chapter, joining the workforce at General Motors. He rose to the challenge of balancing work and education, dedicating his evenings to pursuing a B.A. in Electrical Technology Industrial. His determination paid off, leading him to a prestigious role at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) as a journeyman electrician, where he devoted an impressive 54 years of service. In 1993, Julius discovered love once more and tied the knot with Janice E. Chatman. Soon after, they welcomed their son, Jay Durphey, into the world. In his leisure time, Julius enjoyed barbecuing, swimming in the pool, watching the University of Michigan game with his matching sweater, spending time with his beloved dogs, Precious and Prince, and watching "The Ten Commandments" whenever possible. Julius W. Durphey, you were a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who was always kind and full of laughter. You were a man of faith who cared and worked diligently for his family. You are greatly loved and will be dearly missed. May the 4th always be with you. Services will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home, visitation is Wednesday, August 7, from 12:30 - 1:30 pm, Celebration of Life at 1:30 pm, and committal to follow.
