Jonnie Beatrice (Hunter) Salas' Obituary
Jonnie Beatrice Hunter Salas of Lake Worth died at JFK Hospital in Atlantis, FL surrounded by her family on March 30, 2010. She was 86. Born on March 18, 1924 in Geneva County, AL, Jonnie was next to the youngest of 10 children, and raised in an unbelievably loving home. She graduated from St. Petersburg High School, and obtained a job as a dental assistant shortly after completing 1 year of business school. Jonnie skated professionally for a time in St. Petersburg and loved to dance. Near the end of WWII she met Charles F. Salas, Jr. who was there on R&R. They were married on January 5, 1946 in Key West, where they settled. Charles was laid to rest July, 1995 at Key West Cemetery. She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi, an international women's social, cultural and service organization. Jonnie was a continually spirited participant in both local, state and national politics. She was an original member of the Old Island Restoration Foundation in Key West. Jonnie lives on in her daughter Jan Salas Blue and her husband Jim Blue, son Rick Salas and his wife Mary Salas, son Charles (Buddy) Franklin Salas, III, grandchildren Dulcie DePoo, Kevin Toppino, Adrienne Blue, Carla Salas Justis and Traci Salas, her 11 great-grandchildren, sister Bonnie Hunter Jernigan, and in her many nieces and nephews.
