Dear friends, Today I had a dream that I saw Jay at a computer store, Staples, we had worked there together. He tells me in my dream that all this time I was looking for him under a different name. His name is John and I saw other names. He was happy and he gave me a present a computer. Did not understand the meaning of this dream so I typed John Jay Mulligan in google. He wanted his family know that he is fine and he is with Jesus. Because I love Jesus and through him I was able to see him today. I wrote family on Facebook messages. Please respond when you see this. John Jay, you were humble throughout your life, and I always love you my friend. Always missed you throughout those years but we all have different tasks in life. Today it was a message to your family through me that you are with God!

Jay my closest friend I had at work. We had worked together at Staples for many years. I loved this guy. Always came to work with a positive attitude. We were competing in sales in a funny way. He was part of my life and his family. I love you my friend always!

When We Were Kings

Those heady days of being "the best". I recall how we would walk off the bus of those towns we used to travel to comepte with.: There would always be a group of people (mostly our doomed opponents) watching us walk thru the room into the lockers. They had read of us; now here were were; in person. And always, when one of them would figure which one was Jay Muilligan, he would steal a wink and a head nod to others ; with a "there he is!" lip read.

Excellence and success always seemed to be a dour pursuit: you put your head down, ignored most o life and took no prisoners. Jay taught me differently: that you could do it with joy and abandon. If it wasn't fun; it didn't count. I could list a page full of that fun here, but the more important aspect is that I took it with me into "real life", in my dealings in the rough & tumble biz world of my day. Even before this contemplation brought on by this sad tiding. I've offen credited that to our friend here..

To use one of his old phrases: "Newo Rule This Year" That new rule is that this world is a sadder place without Jay Mulligan. But gee whiz were we lucky to have him, each of us for limited spells..

As I write these remembrances, I can't help but notice the slightly deformed knuckle on my right hand, the result of a rather physical sparring session years ago with Jay in the Saratoga High School wrestling loft. It is a daily reminder of his presence during the formative years of my life: as teammates on our undefeated '71-'72 Blue Streak squad, traveling together to summer wrestling tournaments, as work out partners trying to make weight, drilling takedowns on borrowed tumbling mats on his parents' front lawn, holding his eyeglasses as he dispatched yet another opponent, chasing down fence jumpers at SPAC, and perhaps the highlight of our years together: sharing the champion's podium in our respective weight classes at the 1975 Colgate Open. A nationally ranked wrestler, Jay was clearly a dominant force, but there were those times when the outcome of a match could be in doubt. He would, almost nonchalantly if not strategically, give up takedowns and back points only to find himself trailing late in the third period. Never to be counted out, his teammates knew what his opponent did not; Jay was just warming up. He would inevitably escape, execute a flawless throw, run the Gable arm bar, and pin his opponent just as time was running out, to the wild cheers of the crowd. Jay's professed faith in his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, reminds me of those matches. In wrestling as in life, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. Congratulations, Jay, on finishing well.
