James William Smith's Obituary
On January 14th, we suddenly and shockingly lost James William Smith. A husband, son, brother, uncle, friend to countless, a “Titan,” and an inspiration. An inspiration to those he knew for 20 years or 20 minutes. An inspiration in his infectious zest for life. His mental and physical will to overcome. His ability to include and protect. His ability to love. Love deeply creatures great and small.
Inspiration. Jim had it in spades to have gone from modest means in Syracuse, New York, to becoming a trainer and gym owner in Saint Petersburg, Florida. A man who once was alone and lived in his car to creating a warm home in which he, and his beloved Amanda, would always welcome one and all as evidenced by countless invitations on weekends, to the dozens of friends attending their Friendsgiving each year. He would give what he had, whether he had it or not, and do so with that contagious smile. His joyful, “Hey, Brother!” wasn’t just a greeting. It was an embrace. It was inclusion.
It was rare not to see a heart warming smile on Jim’s face. Immediately disarming someone expecting something else from this mountain of a man. A mountain of character and strength. Certainly befitting the name of his fitness center, Titan Training. Titan: One that is gigantic in size and power: one that stands out for greatness of achievement. Jim, you did stand out for greatness. You did achieve. You also selflessly encouraged the same in others, and you will continue to inspire us beyond your 45 years. We promise to make them count.
We also promise to alleviate quite possibly Jim’s only fear, not in life, but in death. The fear of his extraordinary wife, Amanda, in any pain. Amanda, a formidable pillar of quiet strength to Jim’s exuberant form. A beautiful pairing. He will always carry her heart, as we carry her through this stressful time. He will hold her dear, as we hold her hand. He will wish her peace, as we give her peace of mind. Jim, we promise as you protect her from above, we will protect her here. Only in time will her heart heal, but it will be a privilege to address her immediate needs and practical matters now. We have her now and always, Jim. Please rest, “Brother.”
To all who knew him, please join us in celebrating Jim's life on Saturday, March 9th beginning at 3pm at Cowboys Dance Hall (12333 66th St N, Largo, FL 33773).
