Herbert F. Rankin's Obituary
82, of Saint Petersburg, died Wednesday Feb 3, 2010 at home. He was born in Orlando, Florida and graduated from Orlando High School with the class of 1945. He attended Orlando Junior College and was a graduate of the University of Florida. While at the university he became a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and Scabbard and Blade, a National Military Honor Society.
He served in the US Army as an enlisted man and as an officer, retiring from service in 1970 as a Lieutenant Colonel. LTC Rankin was awarded the Bronze Star, the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Presidential Citation, and several service medals. He was also awarded Air Crewman's wings.
LTC Rankin was a life member of The Retired Officer's Association, the American Philatelic Society, and the American Philatelic Research Library. He was also a member of the Orange County Historical Society, the University of Florida Alumni Association, the Cinderella Stamp Club (England), and the American Philatelic Congress.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ailstock Rankin; his son, Raymond M. Rankin, of Columbus, Georgia; his daughter, Melissa L. Williams, of St. Petersburg; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
