HELEN FRANCES WILSON WALKER
(June 4, 1924 – June 15, 2020)
Helen Frances Wilson Walker died June 15th very quickly and peacefully at the age of 96. She was born during the Great Depression on June 4th, 1924. She grew up in Lavonia, Georgia. Helen learned a strong sense of duty and work ethic by her parents and she worked in their family café while a young girl. She graduated from Lavonia High School in 1936. Helen aspired to work as she attended business administration classes in Atlanta, Georgia. and obtained a position with AT&T in Atlanta.
Helen met Jim Walker in 1942 in Atlanta, Georgia. through two mutual friends and they married September 26, 1944. Together they moved to California, then to Mobile, Alabama and back to Mountain View, Georgia just south of Atlanta.
Helen and Jim had two children, Brenda Joyce Walker and James Norman Walker. She created a stable, comforting home environment for their children to grow up in. As a Mom, she is sincerely appreciated for her selfless sacrifices and various lessons of life, like how to use a napkin, to say “please” and “thank you” and lots more. She loved caring for her home, sewing, & gardening. She also worked for many years with Tucker Leather Goods. They were faithful members of First Baptist Church of Tucker, Georgia. Helen and Jim were never afraid of hard work as they proved this in building their new house in Lilburn, Georgia during 1970 – 1971. They made it their home for over 40 years before moving into Independent Living. Helen enjoyed fishing with family and friends. She learned the game of golf in her 60’s so she & Jim could play together. The family went on long camping adventures / vacations during the 50’s and 60’s, visiting National Parks like Grand Canyon, Mammoth Cave, Painted Desert, Pacific Ocean, Giant Redwoods, Yellowstone, and Yosemite. The family worked together setting up campsites and taking them down as we made our way across this beautiful country. During retirement Helen and Jim enjoyed many hours at a YMCA & YWCA swimming and meeting with friends. They continued to enjoy traveling and were blessed to celebrate 73 years of marriage.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband James Samuel Walker. She is survived by two children, Brenda Joyce Walker and James Norman Walker, daughter-in-law, Anita Willis Walker, grandchildren Dawn, Phillip & Nicholas (wife Jill) and great granddaughter, Camille.
