As many of you know, my Aunt, Graycie Cameron went home to Heaven early Sunday morning, She was 102 years old and had a wonderful and fulfilling life. She loved and was loved by so many.
She was born in Toronto, Canada , June 16, 1914. Aunt Graycie graduated from St. Petersburg, High School at the age of 16, then went on to college. From there she went to Johns Hopkins Hospital for Nursing School, where she graduated Valedictorian of her class in 1948. After graduation, she worked as a charge nurse in the O.R. When she went home for Christmas, she decided to take a job in Surgery at Baptist Memorial in Houston, Texas for 2 years. After returning home for her sister's wedding, she went to Harborview Hospital in Seattle, WA and worked as a charge nurse in Orthopedic surgery for 2 years. While there, she was asked to go to Sitka, Alaska to become an instructor and Supervisor at the Mt Edgecumbe School for Practical Nurses under the Interior Dept. Bureau of Indian Affairs. The students were Indiana, Aleuts and Eskimos. After spending 2 years in Alaska, she learned her sister, Florence wasn't well, so she returned home. A good friend asked her to return to teaching, so she took a position at Gulfport elementary in St Petersburg, FL and taught 4th and 6th grade from 1955 until she retired in 1974. Being restless, she decided on visiting nursing with Bay Area Home Health Services for 2 years.
