I’ve known Gary and his wife Shelagh since 2004. Not just two of my dearest friends, but great neighbors as well. I have some very fond, funny and wonderful memories of our relationship over the years. I am so grateful to have been blessed with that time acquiring those memories. Have a seat and enjoy just a few of the many stories of the Gary I knew.
One of my favorite things was walking out my front door and hearing Gary across the street whistling away while he was outside working on something, and he was always working on something. His whistling never failed to warm my heart and put a smile on my face. There is no one that will be able to whistle so beautifully and so perfectly on key as Gary could. I could have stood outside all day listening to that. Beautiful, crisp, clear melodies that I will forever miss hearing.
Gary had a passion for music. He & Shelagh introduced me to a lot of different artists that I am so grateful to have in my repertoire today. Along with some of that music came some great, memorable times at Gary & Shelagh’s house. We’d get up and dance and just have a wonderful, fun time. Gary & Shelagh weren’t going to leave their Cavalier’s, Dobby & Guinness out of all the fun. They’d pick up those precious, beloved babies and hold them in their arms so the dogs could dance too. I have no doubt that Dobby & Guinness enjoyed it all just as much as we did. It warmed my heart to see Gary & Shelagh dancing together. They had a love like no other.
Gary was also very compassionate towards others. Anyone that had a car break down in front of Gary & Shelagh’s house was a very fortunate person indeed. They couldn’t have asked for a better place to have a vehicle failure. He would be right out there doing everything he could to help them out.
Gary came to my aid numerous times with various homeowner issues that needed to be taken care of. I truly appreciated his help and his wealth of knowledge. He would always explain in detail everything he was doing, because he knew I wanted to figure it out & do it myself. Gary filled me up with knowledge about a lot of tools and “tricks of the trade” with the intention of helping me become more self-sufficient. I’m so grateful to him for caring enough to take the time that he did to fix something & share his knowledge.
Many times I’d come home from my workday and see Gary outside working on a project under his carport. I’d grab a beer and then go over to “supervise”. We’d talk (mostly Gary…the gift of gab like no other) while Gary worked, and then we’d set up chairs waiting for his beloved Shelagh to come home from her workday. She’d go in to grab the dogs and join us. Those were some very good times for the 3 of us to sit and unwind for the day while enjoying each other’s company. Although that was many, many years ago, they were days that I will always hold close to my heart, as they were so special to me. Fabulous, simple times with 2 wonderful people and 2 precious dogs. How does it get any better than that?
There was something so comforting about seeing Gary outside on his carport using his saws & equipment to build or repair something. I mentioned that to Shelagh one time and she completely agreed and said she felt the very same way. We had no idea why it made us feel that way, we just knew that it did. Maybe it was simply because Gary was doing something we knew he loved to do.
Rest in peace my dear friend. You will truly be missed!
