Mrs. Frances Glass Battle's Obituary
BATTLE, Frances G. 76, of Gulfport, passed away Monday, Sept. 27th. Frances was born in Washington D.C. and moved to Richmond, VA. She graduated from John Marshall High. She worked for Richmond Times Dispatch. She drove NASCAR the same time as Lee Petty, Fireball Roberts and Joe Weatherly. It was all male drivers with women trying to enter the field. She was preceded in death in 1969 by her husband, Lawrence and father, Ben Glass and in 1978 by her mother, Josephine. She moved her family to Gulfport in 1970. Frances owned and operated Battle Trucking from 1970 to 1989. She worked for the St. Petersburg Times for 13 years. She also did private investigations. She retired after 16 years from the Pinellas County Schools. She loved country music, dancing, NASCAR and the Bucs. She is survived by 3 daughters, Deborah Ferguson, Sherie Haig, Linda Masi; 3 sons, Larry, Paul and Lonnie Battle. Frances had 9 grandchildren, Mickey Casteel, Teri Dawson, Joseph, Candice & Beryl Vivian Battle, Michael Brugnoli, Lisa & Chris Masi, and Sherie Batson. She also had 9 great-grandchildren, Crystal Clough, Lacey and Sara Baer, Elizabeth, Kayman and Kailyn Casteel, Jordan, Kayla and Jayden Batson. She had her beloved pets she rescued from a shelter. Family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the SPCA, 9099 130th Ave. N, Largo, FL 33773. or Suncoast Hospice Foundation, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760. Services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at Memorial Park, 5750 49th St. N. St. Petersburg.
