Mrs. Carolyn Guthrie Brown's Obituary
Brown, Carolyn Guthrie, went to be with her loving Lord and Savior on March 13, 2016. She was born on June 2, 1929 in Cameron, NC, the daughter of Lula and James Mitchell Guthrie. She later moved to Chapel Hill, NC and attended the University of North Carolina. There she attended classes along with her brother, Jim Guthrie, and her mother before graduating with a degree in physical education. At UNC, she was a member of Alpha Delta Phi sorority and was active throughout her life. After moving to Charlotte, NC, she was a school teacher, the Charlotte Swim Club coach, and enjoyed playing women’s basketball for several corporate teams. For many years, she was the president of the Spinster’s Club until she married William C. Brown in 1960. She later moved to Houston and Nashville before settling into her life in St. Petersburg in 1984. She spent many of her later years travelling the world teaching classes along with her husband on several cruise lines. Throughout her life, she was very active with the PTA, PEO, numerous neighborhood groups, and especially her beloved Presbyterian Church. She was honored to have been recognized by Rotary International as a Paul Harris Fellow for her outstanding commitment to the community. She loved to cook and take care of all her family and friends. She loved deeply and was loved deeply in return. Carolyn in survived by her loving husband of over 55 years, her two children; Mitchell Brown and his wife, Laurel of Jupiter, FL and Richard Brown of Ft. Myers, FL; five grandchildren Allison, Kevin, Hunter, Chase, and Chloe; and her niece and nephew, Mary Lou Sawyer and Jimmie Guthrie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to First Presbyterian Church, St. Petersburg.
