I met Bryan when we were both 9 years old in St Pete, 4th grade and we were generally inseparable all the way through high school. Around age 11 we both took an interest in playing chess. I have a number of memories of being locked in each other's head lock and rolling around the yard to settle arguments on whether a chess move was really a chess move.
We set chess aside as too violent and moved on to catching snakes in Fossil Park. I can remember proudly carrying a bag of water snakes to my backyard for closer study. After taking a weekend to catch 30 or so and then examining them for an hour or so we just dumped the bag out in my backyard and forgot about them.
We didn't do the snakes any favors but they were all OK because my mom found them all over when she went to hang out laundry.
One or both of us were grounded most of the time for the next few years...I would still be grounded today if all our shenanigans were discovered.
We had so many Tom Sawyer/ Huckleberry Finn adventures that if they were published would be treated as wildest exaggeration. We laughed, cried, sweated and bled together and occasionally set ourselves or each other on fire.
Good times.
