June 29, 1943 - December 10, 2021
Farber, Barry M., 78, of Gulfport was born on June 29, 1943, in Cambridge, MA, the son of Naomi Sickels Farber and Irving Farber and passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021. Barry went to grade school in Brookline, MA and graduated from Brookline High School in 1961. He then went to Indiana to attend Purdue University to obtain his masters degree. Following that he went to UCLA for his graduate work. Barry’s first post graduate job was in Irving, CA, in banking. In 1969, he received a Teaching Fellowship at Thomas College in Waterville, ME. After one year of teaching on the graduate level he realized this was going to be his lifetime occupation as he loved teaching. Barry taught at Thomas College for 10 plus years and then transferred to the University of Maine in Augusta, ME where he taught business and finance courses for the rest of his tenure. Two liberal arts colleges, Colby College in Waterville, ME and Bates College in Lewiston, ME, hired Barry to teach business courses as an Adjunct Faculty Member. Upon retirement from teaching 47 years, Barry was honored with two Professor Emeritus Awards at the University of Maine and Bates College. In 1972 Barry married Susan Scott and spent the next 48 years together in their lake side home on Messalonskee Lake (part of the Belgrade Lakes Chain of Lakes of Maine). Barry was predeceased by his only sister, Joyce Farber Hurvitz. He leaves behind his wife Susan; five nephews Rabbi Mitchel Hurvitz, Aaron Hurvitz, Noah Hurvitz, Ilan Hurvitz and Jonathan Weisman. He also leaves behind two nieces, Shannon Bianchi and Sarah Plasse and 12 young grandnephews and nieces. Barry and Susan wintered in Gulfport, FL and returned to Maine for summers on their 11-mile-long lake. Barry’s love of live music became his hobby and live theater, and entertainment was very plentiful in Florida. He sold the lake house after 48 years and decided to make the condo in Florida their permanent residence in retirement. Barry will be laid to rest in Florida, and it was his wish not to have a funeral in this difficult time of the pandemic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bayfront Hospice Care Center, 701 6th Street South, St. Petersburg, FL 33701.
