Jay Scales was my buddy since were were kids riding bikes over every street in Greenwood. One day we decided to work on our bikes in Jay's parents garage. We took them all apart, painted them, cleaned and greased parts then put them back together. Long story short...we had parts left over...and they were never the same after that day! Luckily it wasn't too long before we got our drivers license and proceeded to drive (too fast) over every street in Greenwood. We were both pulled over..more than once..by officers Bob Dine and Lefty Peavler. Jay and I started at IU in 1963. During his brief stay there we hung out very often at his dorm room (listening to his Roy Orbison records)...or playing pool in the Union Building. We actually even studied together...(once or twice). After Jay left IU he got married and drafted. I graduated and got a job in Cleveland, moved back to Greenwood, in late 1968 and spent way too much time with Jay..having way too much fun with him and "the gang". In all those years in grade school, high school and over the next 50 plus years we never got angry with each other, always made each other laugh...and yes, we cried together once or twice. Jay was a very special guy and a very special part of my life and I will cherish his friendship and memory forever. MISS YOU BUDDY !! Tim Smart
